The Times Record is the proud publisher of this wonderful children's book, commemorating Fort Smith's 200th year.
The project started like many do. A well-connected friend, Jeff Beachamp of Bedford Camera and Video, reached out to the Times Record about an idea. This idea of possibly creating a special children's book had been growing through the Fort Smith Bicentennial Committee and was championed by Kathy Watson, author of the poem "My City is a Fort." She wrote the poem in honor of the bicentennial celebration.
Once the connection had been made, we were off to the races. Well, sort of. Projects take a while, and we had to bring in more help. Enter the gracious Stacy Bates of Stacy Bee Art. She worked quickly and tirelessly to develop custom artwork that would bring Kathy's idea alive.
After we began work, we also reached out to area businesses to help us get the word out by sponsoring schools in the area. Sparks was the first to jump on board as a presenting sponsor. Then others got involved. Through the gracious support of the business community, we were able to provide every single elementary school with 15 complimentary copies. See their special tributes, written specifically to the children and families of the Fort, in the book.
As a daily newspaper and multi-media company, we are pretty used to getting things printed and distributed to the public. But this project was truly an honor for our staff to work on. From the beautiful imagery to the words that so perfectly captured the heart of our historic city, at every turn this project was a delight.
We hope you will part of supporting this unique project!
